lake wales Graduation Candidate Advocate
Rebecca was born and raised in Southern California and attended Crafton Hills College to prepare for a career in education. In a change of events, she headed down a career path in the casino industry. After working in casino management for almost 20 years, her family made a cross-country move to Florida. In searching for a new career, Rebecca ran across a position with Polk Acceleration Academies. She believes that her position as a Graduation Candidate Advocate helps reconnect teens that were pushed out of high school to realize their dreams. The position is entirely different than what she has done before, but it excites her that she can be a part of an organization that helps students improve their lives. Through working with Acceleration Academies, she has realized that the Academies do more for teens than help them get their high school diploma; the staff also help them achieve goals, build confidence, and provide a safe place for the students to be themselves.
Favorite or most significant year in school and why: Senior year with friends and fun.
Favorite book: Harry Potter, and not just because of the good vs. evil motif, but because it shows how you can overcome circumstances, even if you constantly have to deal with those who put you down or want to destroy you. Only you can define who you truly are, and only you can be in charge of your own destiny. Oh, and the whole magic part helps, I guess.
Favorite food: Pizza of course, no explanation needed.
Real-world superpower: Empathy. I live by two rules: never judge someone until you have walked a mile in their shoes, and treat others how you want to be treated.
